I was watching that show Restaurant Impossible where struggling businesses are given help and advice in an effort to turn things around. It seemed like one of the most common theme for the businesses was the fact that they tried to appease everyone which resulted in things like having a gigantic menu that harms the business in the end. Therefore, many times the general direction was to do things such as providing the business with a more specific theme and a smaller menu so that they can focus in attracting a certain crowd.
I guess that is a pretty good point as many times creating something that is more specific or focused on a particular niche can enable you to generate more success as you aren’t trying to compete with everything as opposed to something specific. I often heard the saying of someone who is a jack of all trades but a master of none. So like in that whatever category the person would be competing against there is usually someone that just dedicates themselves to that one area where they can easily overshadow them as a result.
Maybe once you are established and have the luxury of a large following to successfully expand that would be different, but I suppose when you are starting out it’s better to focus on something specific.
