I thought it was going to be pretty hot today on my way to the Global studio. Fortunately it was pretty cool overall since it was the early morning. For the topic today I thought it would be interesting to talk about how so many people try to get rid of perfectly functional items due to reasons such as they are moving or that they bought something that is more modern day. For people who are moving into a new home or establishing like an office on a budget there are a ton of perfectly good free furniture and other resources that are available for free.
For this example I used sites like craigslist , kijiji and freecycle. Even items like a piano which are usually a huge investment can be found for free. I was quickly able to find listings where people just simply needed to get rid of item as you can see here:
I often hear things like parents who want to get their child one but that the price is just too out of reach. Instead of paying hundreds if not thousands of dollars this is a perfectly viable way to get one for free as an example.
Even some of the most common items like chairs for the house or office can be expensive at times as they can easily cost one hundred dollars or more after tax.
However, similarly a quick search on the freecycle site I was able to find a listing of someone willing to part ways with them for free too.
While you could get rid of your old items by simply reversing the role here, there are often a lot of non profit organizations that will take your items for free too such as furniture and computer items. Many times it can end up costing you money if you have to try and dispose the item yourself such as having to rent an appropriate vehicle to transport the item. But in these examples you could give your item to a good cause and at the same time arrange for the organization to pick it up for you.
I first used a well known example where you can even donate furniture items to the Salvation and Army. When it comes to things like computer I used an organization here called Freegeekvancouver where even if your computer item doesn’t work anymore they will still take it off your hands.
Of course, use some precautions too when getting free stuff as you never know if it is simply a dummy ad for scam purposes. For example, communicating with the person through the phone and asking questions why they are getting rid of the product can help a lot in determining if it is legitimate. I often found copying and pasting the ad literature into a search engine like Google to be useful as usually an illegitimate ad will appear in multiple places except with different contact information. Overall, don’t overlook this if you are tight on a budget I say.
