I don’t usually buy things like pre-packaged salads as the price is usually very high compared to simply buying the vegetables and tossing your own salad together. However, this clearance price got me to at least turn my attention to it as I noticed this bag of salad was being cleared out for $1.99. The regular price is apparently about $7.99 for 249g worth of product. The reason for this price? Upon inspection the best before date was the 26th of this month which is literally tomorrow. If you are buying it then the assumption would be you are consuming it for tonight’s dinner.
This got me to think too of those recent stories of people who rely on clearance deals for nearly expired food as you can see the significant savings one can find on a daily basis. Is it actually feasible to do this in the long run? Funny enough I did a project once where each day I found something that was one dollar or less and I had no real issues finding a lot of great stuff which included grocery items. So in that sense it is fully possible to be this frugal and still eat healthy. Oddly enough too, the healthy foods I find can be cheaper since they are often just raw foods that you need to prepare yourself.
The primary downside I find is because you don’t know what is going to be heavily discounted you can’t exactly pick and choose what you want. Today it could be a large bag of salad and tomorrow it could be beef patties. So that’s the negative to it if you have strict dietary requirements. But even I don’t go that extreme where for me if I find a great deal that matches my needs then instead of buying the non sale item I would go for that instead. If there is no item that I actually enjoy then I would just get whatever is the best value for what I currently want. Although this is where stocking up comes into play where your previous frugal purchase is something you can go back to. But it’s a great example on how those daily deals are there.
