I am pretty sure in almost every news story lately there have been talks about how celebrities have had their personal photos and accounts hacked as a result of people obtaining access to data on a cloud network. Of course this created debate such as how some people are saying you shouldn’t ever put anything extremely private or important on these kinds of services in the first place.
That’s one of the reasons why I personally try to avoid free services such as Gmail for my e-mail or whenever I see options to back up my data on a cloud service I try to avoid it. Sometimes it’s just better to spend the extra money to have better security over your data and properties. Unless we are talking about things that you specifically want to get out to as many people as possible such as a funny greeting card. Granted that doesn’t mean you are 100% safe, but it sure reduces the risk of it getting compromised as easily.
Even when it comes to software I prefer to buy a standalone version as opposed to ones that force you to use its web based solutions. May have to pay more, but it gives you more security control I think.
