I was reading a story recently of someone who got hit hard in the past few years due to all the shutdowns where it seemed like he was one of those people who simply couldn’t recover financially and professionally as for whatever reason he seemed to be on a less desired list of workers to hire back as the economy was slowly recovering. He had a fairly set vision on how his professional life will be in terms of promotions and refused lower position work as he grew which makes sense I suppose.
But now that he is essentially poor a lot of people are advising him to look for work in different fields to make a living but he seems insistent that he must work at something tat was the same or better in terms of position and pay. That made me wonder where if I all of sudden became poor would I stay with the same plan I had before or would I simply explore different paths due to the situation?
I would likely be open minded in finding alternative work if necessary to see where it goes because when you are poor you can’t be as picky. Like the saying goes, beggars can’t be choosers. I wouldn’t rule out doing something completely different such as working on a farm where I could treat it as valuable life experience while at the same time getting paid to both live and invest towards whatever my goals would be at the time. For example, using the small funds I save to start a small side gig business as an example. All this would keep me busy until something that is more appropriate to my goals comes up or I create the opportunity myself.
But being closed minded and insisting that you must stay with a specific path is an error I think. Even if you are not in a desperate situation financially you never know how different paths may introduce you to things you never knew you would love. I know that’s how a lot of people ended up having the careers that they have such as by just being open minded in trying certain types of work.
