This was kind of interesting news as the talk show host Howard Stern apparently will not be getting a new contract with SiriusXM as the company doesn’t feel he is worth say $100 million a year due to the audience for his show going on a decline. This seems to be a trend with a lot of entertainment hosts and the argument is these people in particular are way too political for one side which makes them alienate over half the potential audience base.
This resulted in arguments that they were being cancelled because of their political views which in some ways I guess it is kind of true. But at the same time it seems like not trying to cater to a larger audience base has resulted in the shows either not being profitable or creating a product that just doesn’t have the mass appeal a company is looking for.
You just can’t get too comfortable if you are currently in a position of extreme fame and wealth versus constantly doing things to grow. Especially with a new generation that is always coming up which you will probably need to cater to. But it makes you wonder, if people like Howard Stern kept the politics away would it be more successful? Something to think about for your own business.
