Working For Free At The Start

Saturday, November 5th, 2011 by

I was talking to a friend today where I was catching up in regards to how he was doing in life professionally as I remembered that he was trying to get into a different field/industry that is more within an artistic field. It was interesting as when he started this new path he was saying how his mindset was to pretty much do work for free for a year in order to build some kind of portfolio. As it turns out, he has steadily kept himself busy now and he is in the midst of increasing his rates as he gains more credibility.

That’s interesting as most people would have the mindset that there is no way they would work for free as they want to get paid like all the other professionals as if you keep working for free then you are essentially underselling yourself. But I would say in a situation like that it makes perfect sense to volunteer on various projects to get experience and referrals unless for some strange reason you have a lot of connections with people who are willing to take a chance on you right from the start.
