Saving Old Money Currency

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by Alan Yu

My parents was telling me about this old $2 bill that was given to my brother a long time ago and how it is suppose to be worth about $500 or so now. That brought up a discussion about saving old money currency as a form of investment.

I’ve never really been into this type of investing/collecting as I guess during the time where the currency in question is in abundance you tend to not think too much of it. Just the thought of say a very old penny being worth say $10 seems kind of strange. Something like that one million dollar coin I heard about before seems more like an investment to me.

Then again, I guess like any type of collecting the dollar value of the items are subjective and some people would be willing to pay big amounts for it.

The Habit of Grabbing The Far Back Items

Monday, April 21st, 2008 by Alan Yu

I think almost everyone has done this at one time or another where whenever we shop in say a store or supermarket for items that are in some kind of package/container we tend to grab the ones at the far back. I guess the logic is that the one at the back is somehow newer and so we perceive that as getting a better value for our dollar.

Sometimes there are legitimate reasons for this such as just the other day I saw this guy who was interested in buying a radio it seemed and he had absolutely no problem in opening up the package and literally plugged it into a wall to see how it was like. He did eventually put the radio back in the box and afterwards grabbed a new box of the same product to purchase that one. So in those cases I can see why you would want to grab the ones in the back.

Other times though such as when I see people buying cereal where all the products have the same expiry date and are clearly unopened it’s just amazing to see the effort that people go to in order to get the one from the far back. I’m all for trying to get the most for your dollar, but at the same time sometimes you have to realize that the item you are buying isn’t any better or worse than what everyone else is going to buy. Time is money too.

Theoretical Stay At Home Parent Salary

Friday, April 18th, 2008 by Alan Yu

A lady was telling me recently on how she saw some kind of survey on TV where the jobs of stay at home moms were theoretically assessed by various employers. By factoring all the roles such as cleaning, babysitting and cooking it was estimated that you would have to pay a person about $140,000 a year as a result.

Now from my understanding the purpose of the survey was to further value the efforts of people who are stay at home parents from a financial point of view to avoid ridicule when compared to say the other person in the household who is working at a traditional job.

While I personally value people’s efforts in those types of situations regardless of hearing that survey, I personally don’t see how that is an accurate way of breaking something down from a dollar value. Example, it would be like me maybe taking photos for a family album all year long while organizing it digitally and then saying if you were to hire a professional photographer to take the pictures and a computer expert to organize the photos it would be worth six figures. It’s not really the same I’d say.

In general too, I think this is one of those things where you shouldn’t even try to put a dollar value on since on many levels you are doing it for personal reasons.
