The Age Factor Bias of A Purchase

Sunday, January 27th, 2013 by

I heard a topic today about someone who was looking to buy a home and one point which was brought up was that they didn’t want the home to be too old due to the expenses one may have to incur due to things like renovations. Interestingly enough, instead of basing it on facts such as if renovations have already been done just the sole point of what age the property was automatically gave him a bias that it must be breaking down anytime soon. Therefore, he kept swaying what could have been a good deal for him.

Granted when it comes to certain things like produces you do want to worry about the age, this just makes me think of things such as a plain table where regardless if it is say 10 years old as long as it works and matches your need why sway it off? Especially if the price is right. In some ways it reminds me of how when shopping people don’t want to buy a “used” item whereas the word “refurbished” makes it sound more appealing. In general you could say new stuff could be just as worst if it has bad workmanship. Bottom line, you still need to check everything regardless of the age.

Dumb But Successful

I was having a funny conversation today as I was talking to a person about a field he was very interested in making a living out of but has always been too lazy to actually do anything to start it. So I started to show him examples on how some everyday people have and are doing what he talks about and are very successful at it. The thing was some of the things these people produced weren’t very creative or are of high quality at all. This is where it got so interesting as he was so tempted to say that those people were “dumb” but he immediately took that back and mentioned that they can’t be dumb as they found a way to make it work for them.

I know most people in those cases wouldn’t even think twice about simply criticizing or giving credit to those that have made something big regardless if everyone perceives their work as bad. I personally always see stories like these as an opportunity to learn as usually in these types of cases these people do the absolute bare-bone minimums in order to get the results that many others desire. It’s a good way to help you evaluate what works and what doesn’t in whatever subject it is that you are interested in being involved with.

On a different note, it is kind of funny in this case as it seems like for the person I was talking to it seems like it will take a lot more examples to make him mad enough to actually do something. Makes you wonder what kind of success from a simple idea one needs to see until they say “no more” and attempt to seriously work towards something.

Minor Inconveniences Is Still Good

So I have a remote control where it is one of those universal ones that can operate virtually every equipment. To charge it up you would have to put it on this docking station of sort. Recently it seems like it has worn off a little where when you place the remote in the charging dock it doesn’t actually charge. I suppose that is due to natural wear and tear. You actually have to place a little bit of pressure on the remote to get it to charge now.

The funny thing was how a person said that I should just purchase a new docking station for the device. However, my thought is that there are so many ways to add simple pressure to the remote to get it to charge that it seems like waste of money to just replace it all together. Example, even placing a toy block on top of it will do the job.

I always believe in cases like this that you should try and milk the item for all its worth or until it truly breaks where you can’t use it anymore. Saves you a lot of money this way.

Finding Service From Craigslist or Yellow Pages

There was a debate today about how when you were looking for professional services at a free classified ads site like craigslist is just asking for trouble. While everyone usually advertises its services for a lot less than average, it is apparently more likely that it is a fraud of some sort. Someone then mentioned if you want to be safe you should just look up a source like the Yellow Pages as established companies usually advertise in it. Of course, a ton of people then chimed in how they found companies that were just as bad on that as well.

From a business perspective I can honestly say that I have seen both established and new business use both. It’s almost like the old debate I heard before how if you want to find qualified employees then you must use paid sites as oppose to looking for people on free classified ones. Even in that case I have seen both work just as well.

For finding services though I think it just comes down to researching the offers as thoroughly as possible. I would think an option like Craigslist will probably have way more options for you to choose from to sort out whereas a source like Yellow Pages, which requires some hefty fees to be listed, will usually have a smaller pool of large companies. Either way is no guarantee of the quality I’d say.

Going Cheap At First Thought

So I am thinking of the resources that are necessary to create the web oriented idea and of course the one thing that you need is a web host. Now for sure I know who the reliable provider would be where the trade off is that the packages are more expensive. Then I saw this offer today where a particular provider is offering a full year of service for about $10.

Not surprisingly, a lot of people complain about the frequent downtimes as that company simply oversells its inventory which hinders the performance for everyone it seems. Some people even commented with remarks such as a “What do you expect for $10 a year” type of mentality.

It was a really tempting offer though considering I am just trying this idea out for the heck of it and it isn’t exactly a mission critical type of scenario. At this point though I have decided against the dirt cheap option as there is a chance that the idea could bloom pretty well and therefore it would be a real pain to deal with transfers and all.
