Career Changes And Money

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today I was having a discussion with a person on the amount of times that people change careers as some people usually want to learn more in life while others want more money. We were just comparing some answers from say young adults to people who have already been doing something for say 5+ years.

The answers we saw was that as one gets older, in terms of money it’s more about being able to sustain a lifestyle as oppose to say making millions. I guess that isn’t too surprising of an answer. There were also some other examples of people changing careers specifically for money. Overall, they didn’t seem too happy as a result.

Of course everyone is different and I’m positive most people have had to make this type of decision at some point in their life. In my opinion, it should be more about growth if you plan to change careers.

Working For Benefits

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Someone was telling me how one of his strategies in order to save money is to work in industries that he normally spends a lot of money in order o save money. For example, it could be that someone buys a lot of electronics and so they work part time at a retail store to enable themselves to buy products for a lot cheaper.

In some ways when you think about it I suppose it can be a great way to save money. You are essentially getting paid to do something you are interested in anyways and at the same time you are saving money on things you were going to buy. The main drawback for some is that you are sometimes inclined to buy more than normal too since you figure that you are getting a discount to warrant purchasing more.

This concept isn’t just limited to materialistic items as people do it for things such as receiving specific service benefits too. One of those small extra things you can do assuming you have the time. I personally prefer to establish contacts to do so.

Such A Thing As Too High of An Hourly Rate?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was talking to some people today about the hourly rate that people charge in specific professions in various industries. We were talking about numbers varying from say $30 to $500 an hour with professions such as a say a lawyer or a professional business consultant.

It was kind of interesting to see people’s different views on the matter on what qualifies as a legitimate factor for people to establish a fair hourly rate. Some people mentioned factors such as they paid for a lot of school education and so that would be a factor. Others say it should depend on the uniqueness of their skills/offerings.

It’s always fun too see people who don’t actually work in a particular field go off on how it just seems expensive to say pay someone a $100 an hour to draft up what seems like a simple letter. Other examples would be things like public speaking. My personal view for the most part is that it comes down to if the person can get the job done within your expectation. It usually pays for itself in the long run.

Working More And Getting Less

Monday, October 1st, 2007 by Alan Yu

One of my friends was telling me how a person he knew decided to take on two jobs to earn more income. On paper it sounded like a good idea as the person could be earning say an extra $500 to $1000 a week by doing so. Ironically, that wasn’t really the case.

By earning more income, the person was now placed in a higher tax bracket which resulted in more income tax deductions. Unfortunately, the person ended up working a lot more without seeing the expected financial return. I’ve seen this happen before in other situations as well such as people getting a raise at their job and due to being placed in a higher tax bracket afterwards the gain isn’t so great.

So if your intent is to earn more money, it would be wise to research what the tax brackets are ahead of time to give you a good idea on what he real outcome would be.

The First Entry

Friday, November 12th, 2004 by Alan Yu

Hello to everyone who has stumbled upon my personal blog on the Internet. Everyone is probably wondering what this blog is all about and why I decided to write one right? Sounds like the perfect topic to write about as this is my first official entry for this blog.

I personally consider myself a very ambitious individual who always strives to be the best at what I do while constantly growing and expanding my life experiences as there is so much to do and learn in life. While money isn’t everything in life, it definitely does play a role in determining what type of lifestyle one can live. Every day I hear of people who struggle to pay bills or individuals who drool over the thought of owning the latest and greatest. Bottom line, they all complain that they don’t have enough money. I’m personally not a millionaire, not for now at least, but in terms of finance and being able to get the things that I really want, such as going to school without worrying too much about tuition or buying a video game without fearing that my credit card is going to be declined, I have done fairly well for myself. Many of my friends and colleagues also recognize my financial stability and often joke that I am some kind of billionaire.

Quite honestly, most of the people that I have met who complain about their financial situations can easily turn things around if they would just change their habits and attitude. While I do many things to generate an income, one would automatically assume that the answer to their financial problems would be to simply make more money. How you spend it though is also an important factor to consider as I’m sure everyone has read of stories of wealthy individuals becoming broke. Hopefully from writing this blog, I can aspire people to take control of their financial situations and by sharing the events happening around my life it could provide others with ideas to help enrich their lives.

Writing this blog may also come with some consequences as due to the nature of the theme topic, I am prepared to take a lot of criticism from people who feel that they can offer superior advice and lets not forget about the amount of spam I will probably receive from people trying to pitch ways on how I can get rich quick. As I mentioned above, learning different things are always goals that I strive to achieve and writing this blog is something new for me which I hope you all will find beneficial and entertaining.
