Need One Million Dollars To Retire?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 by Alan Yu

I was reading an article today where various people were surveyed on how much money they believe that they would have to save in order to be able to retire comfortably and the figure was close to $1,000,000. Unless I read it wrong, from what I gathered that didn’t account the current assets that people would have such as a house which made me think that everyone must have some pretty high standards when it comes to retirement.

I would think the average person would need about $300,000 or so to live comfortable with anything over that being more of a luxury lifestyle. While I usually try to avoid the borderline way of planning finances to avoid the just getting by mentality, one million in pure savings seems like a lot to consider as a type of necessity to retire.

Working From Home or An Office Space

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 by Alan Yu

When it comes to a working space a lot of times people debate whether or not it is better to set something up at home or if one should simply go out and rent a space.

Working from home is definitely more convenient while at the same time it can be more distracting. You can definitely save a lot of money by doing so too. There are even big corporations that implement a work at home program for their staff in order to save money and it works out well for them.

I personally think an office space is only necessary when it reaches to a point that you have to have a lot of staff or if your profession heavily relies on in-person meetings a lot. Other than that, a lot of people tend to want one just because it sounds like the right thing to do I’d say. A home office can definitely be just as good if not better for a lot of small business people.

Approach Things With A Budget In Mind or Not

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Some people were telling me that when it comes to buying certain things they either first look at their pool of funds and then decide what to buy or they decide what they want to get first and then try to get the necessary funds to purchase it. One person was telling me how you should always have a budget in mind which will help to prevent you from overspending to save money. The other guy was saying that it was better to decide what you truly want first as that way you are purchasing something based more on the overall value of the product based on your needs which will pay for itself in the long run.

Interesting perspectives I thought. I think for myself it depends on the situation. When it comes to everyday things like say buying something to drink I would tend to approach it in a more dollar conscience way as oppose to say purchasing a large item like a TV where that is more about the overall value. For the most part, I would say that I normally tend to go with the non budget approach as I try to get the best value or quality for my needs as I usually think more long term. Of course, I would say that it needs more discipline to go that way too as you need to differentiate a need versus a want when it comes to certain things.
