Cashing Out My Stocks

Saturday, November 10th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Towards the end of last month I decided that I wanted to cash out my stocks from my initial dip into the world of investing. It was an interesting experience I thought as I was able to see the highs and lows of people who invest for a living. I only had less than fifty shares and considering the Canadian dollar seems to be increasing I figured that I may as well cash it and try something else.

By no means am I an expert with this though. I’ve had it for a little over a year and a half with an initial investment of about $1200. The check value that arrived in the mail today was $2005.45. I can easily see how if I invested more in this case the return would have been very good.

I also did get tiny dividend checks during this time as well. So, let’s just say for simplicity sake I made about $800 Canadian with this learning experience. I know that if I cashed it out early this year I would have gotten more as it was valued at about $2600+ and plus that time the US dollar was higher. Maybe I can get some good tips and pointers to try something like this again in the near future.

So, I guess I’ll use that profit for my pool of funds accumulated for this journey so far. The rough breakdown would kind of be like this to date:

Stock Investment: $800
Blog Web Publishing: $105.54
Million Dollar Term: $100

Total: $1005.54

First Block Sold

Monday, November 5th, 2007 by Alan Yu

This is getting fun and interesting so far. My first sold block on the milliondollarterm.com goes to Red Cube Productions. They are a music events promotion company that focuses on electronic dance music while showcasing world renowned talent.

This little experiment so far is reminding me about what it is like to start something from ground up, in a non stressful way of course. Everything from the people who think you are crazy to the ones that want to support you from the start. Like they say, in many ways it is like a numbers game and you can’t take rejection personally.

Almost makes me want to sell through the inventory faster as I’m sure it will produce a lot of interesting stories. I can already imagine the term guessing process becoming a unique and interesting experience.

Shopping Ads

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was checking my e–mail and noticed that I got an invite to beta test a new ad program called shopping ads. Basically, it’s for web publishers to display ads on their site. The way this one works from what I read is that it revolves around finding items from price shopping comparison sites. In turn, it displays new deals on the publisher’s site. Let’s see, I am going to put the code below and let’s see what pops up:

Of course, I can’t actually see what is going to display until I publish this post. If it’s relevant to what people are interested in here, maybe I’ll try using it as another avenue to generate income for this little journey. Oh, happy halloween to everyone as well.

Million Dollar Term

Saturday, October 27th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Alright, so I guess this is technically the first money idea I had which is actually live now. You can visit the website at http://www.milliondollarterm.com. While this isn’t the very first idea that I posted about before, I was just staring at the monitor one day and thought this one was less time consuming.

The main train of thought was that I wanted to create something that could be fun, interactive and at the same time actually provides people the ability to make a profit should they decide to do so. I was trying to think of a board game type of look where people could place ads on these blocks to help them get exposure. I couldn’t help but to be reminded of that million dollar homepage awhile back and thought that the layout and approach might be good.

So the funny thing is that a million is usually the standard figure people use to label as a lot of money, so I tried to determine a good number value wise to determine how many blocks I would need to sell to reach that figure. First I was thinking like $25 per block space, but then trying to imagine selling 40,000 of them seemed a bit much as well as trying to fit them on a page. Strangely enough, 10,000 of them at $100 each sounded like a more well rounded figure.

Of course, the first thing that clicked on my head was that it seems incredibly similar to that other site at first, but I thought it wouldn’t matter too much since the direction isn’t really the same. Like most things too, a lot of the success has to do with the execution such as trying to get the word out. Example, some people start by going to friends and family while others use say a third party publicist.

So, let’s see where this takes me and the type of help I will get along the way. That would actually be great if it worked out too as I’m sure that I can think of ways to use it to help others afterwards while at the same time using some of the funds to continue this journey.

Rolling Out An Idea

Monday, October 22nd, 2007 by Alan Yu

Been awhile since I posted anything in this section. I was trying to flesh out my previous idea, but due to current events it doesn’t seem like I can come up with the necessary time to execute it. I did think of something over the weekend which I will indeed publish since I don’t think it requires too much of a time investment.

I’ve already registered the domain and it should take a few days to flesh out.
