Fake or Authentic Trees

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 by Alan Yu

So with Christmas coming up one thing that I see being advertised is of course Christmas trees. Some people usually prefer to buy a real tree while others use a plastic one. For myself, I have always been using a fake plastic one ever since I was a kid.

I was just looking at the prices too and how you can buy them for as cheap as $7 it seems. In comparison, I passed by this place that sold real trees and it looked like the prices started at about $30. I was just wondering if it was really worth it in the end to buy a real tree as I’m sure getting rid of it afterwards is more of a chore as well.

A fake one just seems better overall to me especially since you can re-use it too.

Saving or Spending?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 by Alan Yu

With black Friday coming up for US residents one topic that I have been hearing constantly is whether or not people will be spending to take advantage of those sales or simply saving up during these times. While there won’t be any black Friday sales here, for myself I would be inclined to save like always unless there is this ridiculously good deal for something I was planning to get.

Overall this holiday season I personally won’t be changing my habits too much. I would think that prices are going to be lower for most items too considering the majority of people probably will be spending less. Funny thing is, since it is close to the end of the year one thing that crosses my mind is whether or not there is anything that I need to spend money on for business expenses as oppose to wasting any potential tax credit before the end of the year.

So, I guess I am one of those people that won’t make retailers too happy this year.

Being Productive Every Minute

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 by Alan Yu

Today while traveling for a bit, I was sitting down and thinking that during this downtime of getting to destination A to destination B that I could have been doing something such as writing content for a project to make the time a little more productive. Sometimes I carry a laptop around and do this, but recently I was thinking of finding a smaller and more portable device for it.

People usually say that time is the most valuable commodity that we have, so in that sense it feels like a waste to me personally if I am not doing something every moment to fully utilize it. That doesn’t mean that I would have to literally be glued to something, but rather there is something actively working in the background as a result of my efforts to generate something positive.

Using this mentality with money too is usually what encourages me to always look out for new opportunities as I believe if you worked hard to earn that money then it only makes sense to make that money work for you afterwards. It’s like saying, you wouldn’t spend all that time making an invention just for it to collect dust would you?

Another thing that I do usually is if I often have to be a certain place either for recreation or business, I usually always like to research about the area too to see if there is anything around there to help make the day more productive. For example, maybe after some research I discovered there is an interesting market and so it wouldn’t hurt to learn more about the area and at the same time possibly finding new ways and options to fulfill daily task needs.

One thing is for sure, if I ever sit there thinking that I could be doing more with my time then that usually is the case.

Creating A Niche Information Site

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 by Alan Yu

It just hit me the other day that there should be an issue that will be coming up soon around here that many people will be interested in, including myself, and so I was actually very interested in creating a site for it. At the same time, I thought this would be something fun to do to see if I could monetize it as well.

Again though, my primary motivation is to create something very informative. While I know exactly what I will use technically to create it, it’s thinking of the domain name that I usually hate as you can ponder for hours wondering if you are making the right choice or not. I know some people just register a bunch of them too to avoid the hassle.

Looks like I better get cracking too as I don’t have too much time before everyone will probably attempt to create something similar.

BC Farmers’ Market

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 by Alan Yu

So today I visited a Farmers’ Market for the first time to see how the prices are in comparison to items you would buy at a store. While I haven’t had a chance to go to an actual farm yet to see the cost of buying the items that way, I figured this would be something semi related.

The location for this one was pretty convenient for me as it was actually around my area and so I had a nice walk. There were these signs along the blocks to show you that you were going the right way.

Eventually, I saw a bunch of tents lined up with vendors from a distance.

There were a lot of people I thought for a market event like this. I thought initially it would just be a handful of people who are regulars to it or are say very picky about getting items that are locally grown and produced.

As you may have guessed, there was pretty much vendor after vendor of grocery items available with some people even creating their own packaged items like juices and dehydrated foods.

The prices were definitely on the high side I thought such as seeing a price of about $2.50 per pound for carrots and $1.25 a pound for apples. As an example, the average price I see at stores is about 69 cents a pound for carrots and about 79 cents a pound for apples. Of course, the main selling point was that every vendor advertised their products as being organic.

Although, sometimes these types of points didn’t really click with me too much such as a vendor selling whole walnuts that are still in its shell and saying how it has all been washed and grown to avoid toxins. Like with that, I don’t see too much of a difference since you still have to break through the shell to get to the item in the first place.

Overall, this type of market seems to be a paradise for people who live and swear by organic food it seems as you are definitely paying a premium price for what you buy. At the same time, many of the items seem like it is better to buy at a store as I even overheard one farmer on how he usually sells to companies wholesale only. Hence, they get a better deal and can probably sell it to you for less than what you can buy it for at this event at a consumer volume.

I had a fun quick tour though. I definitely didn’t expect rock bottom prices like what I hope to see when I get the chance to go to an actual farm and see the deals you can get that way, but in general it’s too bad that the prices wasn’t at least the same or very close to the ones you could get at the supermarket.

One strange thing when I visited the event was this sign:
