Paying To See Your Own Work

Friday, August 29th, 2008 by Alan Yu

I had a funny conversation with a friend where he wanted to see his work at a screening premiere which was for a fun competition. Thing is, everyone has to pay tickets for the event including people who has created work that will be shown.

He was saying how that felt like such a rip off to him considering without people like him who volunteered there time to create the work the screening would have nothing to show. I guess in many ways that is true and at the same time it’s not too unusual.

For myself, I guess if it is a non profit event then I would be more inclined not to mind too much as they need to make up the cost for things like the venue. If it is a for profit event though that is a completely different story in my view.

Not Enough Time VS Not Enough Passion

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by Alan Yu

So recently I was working on a project that had an extreme time crunch that required a lot of dedication and commitment above normal means. In between all this I was talking to a person on how whenever I personally commit to something I am willing to do what it takes. Just like accepting some kind of business agreement, if you agreed to it then you need to find a way to fulfill it.

Now the person kind of implied to me that time was a factor for him in doing this as there simply wasn’t enough time in the day. I then threw an interesting comment on how if this was like say a $100,000 project then I‘m sure the story would be different. Sure enough, he responded by saying that was different as there would be a lot of money to motivate him to do so.

I thought that was such a perfect example on how usually when people say there is never enough time in the day as a reason to not do something that usually the real reason is that they are not passionate or motivated enough about what they are doing.

Good Deeds As Money Debt

Monday, August 18th, 2008 by Alan Yu

Recently I was looking for some volunteer help for a fun project and a person I knew seemed very motivated to try and help. It seemed like he was really going above and beyond and I commented on how I was in his debt now as a way of implying if he ever needed any help I would equally go above and beyond as well.

Now when I thought about it, usually what people do to pay back others in these cases is by using something of monetary value such as treating them to dinner. So that was actually my first reaction as you often feel it is necessary to compensate people back in some financial way to help warrant their time.

In the end, he told me to pay him back by making sure I attend this reunion event. Err….still feels like I owe something still.

Recommended Replacement Time Periods

Sunday, August 17th, 2008 by Alan Yu

For a lot of things like a toothbrush they normally have these recommended amount of days where you should replace the product despite if you think you can get more out of it. I know most people usually never follow those either as a way to save money as they usually question whether or not that date is simply a way to get you to keep buying more faster.

I think for myself the only type of items that I pretty much do follow when it comes to expiry dates are for say certain food and beverage products that have a best before date. Then again, I guess that can be a little different as those are not a how many uses type of deal.

For wear and tear on a product I personally usually do just go based on what I see/feel as oppose to what the box says personally.

Going To Events Because It Is Free

Saturday, August 16th, 2008 by Alan Yu

So today the PNE opened up for the remaining of the summer. For those who don’t know, it is a fair. Since it is the opening day today, anyone who went to the fair before 12pm would get a free admission as the fair normally costs money. Now for this fair you essentially get hand stamps on your way out so that you can re-enter again as a paid person.

It was interesting as so many people attended before twelve who simply went in and then out to get the stamp. My guess is that they would go back later in the evening sometime. I actually know a lot of people that do that every year too and guess what? They never actually end up attending later on in the day.

I guess it is like one of those having to take advantage of it otherwise you feel dumb situations. I just walked around today though and for the most part everything seems similar. For me, since it was free I didn’t really have to worry too much about staying for too long as opposed to if I paid for it. I’m probably going to end up going back and paying a ticket near the end of the fair ironically.
