Not too long ago I decided to use the points program for the supermarket that I shop a lot at. The program itself is free and all you have to do is let the cashier scan your card number after you make a purchase similar to any other reward card. The thing was that people had an option to simply use their smartphones as the card where with a use of an app one can simply have the cashier scan the barcode that displays on it which would act like the plastic card. I did opt for that option as it sounded more economical.
Now I am not sure as the past few times I have had experiences where having the plastic card would have been a lot easier. For example, the first time the lady had trouble scanning the code from the phone which took a bit to fix and they didn’t even have an option to simply manually enter the number. Another time my phone was running out of battery and as a result I couldn’t open the app with bright lights to have it scanned.
For this supermarket at least it feels like simply using a smartphone app is too ahead of its time if you could believe that. As well, the plastic card won’t run out of batteries. I may just have to go un-high tech for grocery rewards at this rate.
