Chapeau Blog Awards
October 23rd, 2008 by Alan YuI wonder how many other bloggers got this e-mail and how “exclusive” this really is. At the same time, who in the world would find the idea of having to pay hundreds of dollars for the chance to win a so called “award” to be recognized as a bargain? First this was the e-mail I received:

So, I did visit the site out of curiosity and they actually list the fees associated in entering which state the following:
Enter from now until November 14, 2008 at a discounted fee.
$195 - From now until November 14, 2008
$250 - From November 15 - December 15, 2008
$275 - From December 16 - January 30, 2009
These “pay for the chance to get recognized” type of businesses must be working to some degree in getting people to pay for them to even exist. Another confusing thing from a business perspective is that they have a sponsors section. In that sense, if there is some kind of overhead that requires money shouldn’t the sponsors be the ones to help pay for this event? A site like that doesn’t look too costly to maintain either. Although, from the looks of it I wouldn’t be surprised if the sponsor is in some way directly affiliated in developing this.
Is there actually a person in the “Blogosphere” that would actually buy into this? I’ll give them one thing…..at least they are upfront that there is a fee.

Sorry for the intrusion, but don’t you agree it’s time for bloggers to be recognized exclusively? And the Chapeau Blog Awards are charging for entries just as other awards competitions are - to cover the costs to award and promote the winners. The Webby’s offer a blog category, but blogging is so unique; we feel there should be an exclusive competition awarding outstanding bloggers. Thanks you for posting your thoughts, however, and we’ll be sure to remove you from future communications.

Cheryl,
For blogs in general and awards, there are a lot of options out there. For example, Blogger’s Choice Awards comes to mind and they also award people based on blog categories. That one happens to be free though so I can’t compare it exactly to the Chapeau Blog Award and its structure.
As for fees and awards, I’m personally not too big of a fan of awards that require you to pay money to be considered. It almost reminds me of that other one where they want to recognize “Business Leaders” and all you have to do is pay a fee. To me, and this is just my personal thoughts, it shows that the possible recipient is kind of desperate for recognition in some ways to be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for it.
In my opinion, if you truly want to solely recognize someone for an outstanding achievement of some sort then there should be no financial requirement on the part of the recipients. Just like say TV or movie awards, if you do need funding then that should come from the sponsors in my opinion. Otherwise, the award comes across as very non genuine to me personally and is more about commercial gain.

They are pretty button-lipped in their “about us” section and as for the actual “awards” - what are they? A certificate, $1000 cash, a logo to put on the winner’s website? Or nothing - nothing is mentioned…
It’s just an exercise to exploit people’s vanity, I believe.
