Celebrity Apprentice - Episode 12

Friday, March 21st, 2008 by Alan Yu

Right from the get go the episode continued off from last week where it was announced that two more people would be fired with some type of task that would take place immediately. It turns out that the task was an interview process where Donald Trump had two business reporter guests being Jim Kramer from mad money and Erin Burnett from CNBC.

Overall, it looked like the interviewers preferred Trace Adkins and Carol Alt. They didn’t seem to like Piers Morgan’s aggressive personality and Lennox Lewis didn’t seem as confident through the process. One thing that I thought was kind of funny was how Jim Kramer always seemed like he has too much energy or something as he would talk super fast paced while over emphasizing his points. Guessing that is just the way he is though.

This was one of the goofiest boardroom deliberations I have seen. In the beginning it was pretty apparent that Lennox Lewis had one of the weaker performances and so he was the first one to be fired. It then came down to Carol Alt, Piers Morgan and Trace Adkins. The ultimate deciding factor on the final two was that Donald Trump wanted to establish this “Good VS Evil” type of battle between Trace Adkins VS Piers Morgan as he wanted to see them go at it and believed that they disliked each other enough that it would create a great rivalry. That was ultimately the reason Carol Alt was fired. This was definitely more entertainment oriented than business. Funny nonetheless.

The final task was that a large charity event will be held and the tasks would be divided into different aspects that the teams would have to negotiate with each other in doing. Four past contestants were invited back to the show to help in the final tasks where the two project manager would get to choose their teammates. Trace Adkins chose Lennox Lewis and Marilu Henner while Piers Morgan chose Stephen Baldwin and Carol Alt. Ultimately, Trace Adkins would be responsible for the events décor while working with the entertainment aspects of the event where the special guest artist was the Backstreet Boys. Piers Morgan was responsible for catering services while producing a live auctioning event.

There was this one hilarious moment where like most celebrities they have a list of demands in terms of items and accommodations whenever they attend an event.

Trace Adkins thought that some of them were redundant and so he decided to talk to the Backstreet Boys about it. There was such a generation gap between himself and them I thought as during their conversation one of the backstreet boys member talked about wheatgrass and Trace Adkins had a deer in a headlight expression. Here is a brief clip of it:

In the end, it looked like Trace Adkins biggest obstacle is being able to cater to the Backstreet boys to their satisfaction while Piers Morgan may not be able to draw as many celebrities to the event compared to Trace.

So Many Lottery Winners

Thursday, March 20th, 2008 by Alan Yu

I was just watching the news on how there is a lottery here called the 6/49 and in the last draw there wasn’t anyone who won the jackpot. Instead, 239 people got five numbers right along with a bonus number which qualifies for the second level of winnings.

That number sounded absurdly high and so out of curiosity I decided to see what the numbers were. Apparently the main numbers were 23, 40, 41, 42, 44, 45 and the bonus number was 43. So by looking at that it means that there was a possibility that 239 people literally chose the number combination from 40 to 45. Who would of thought huh?

Another funny thing was that there were so many people that won the second level prize that the money distribution would be about $1,993.70 for each person. Since in comparison there were only 106 people that got five numbers right those people actually got more as their winnings were divided to $2,223.40 each person.

I guess it is free money for them so no one is complaining, but I just thought it was such a strange happening.

Really Taking Advantage of Free Meals For Kids

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 by Alan Yu

I was at a buffet restaurant yesterday and like most buffets there is a price plan for kids, adults and seniors. For this one in particular the policy was that any children ages 5 and under get to eat for free. There was one family/group in particular that caught my attention as it seemed like there were about 8 kids in the group and so the only people who had to pay were the two adults.

A little excessive don’t you think? While granted if you actually have that many kids then it is one of those great perks to benefit from, but if not I guess you have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to saving money. I am one of those people who hates to keep taking without giving back in that fashion regardless if I would save a bundle.

A person at my table then made a comment on how they must save a lot of money by doing that. Overall, in the end they may not have been saving that much this way when you think about it as the two people must have paid at least $30 and with that you could buy a whole lot of groceries to feed the whole family for more than a day. The price you pay when dining out.

Another Unexpected Credit Card Limit Increase

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 by Alan Yu

This happened at almost around the same time last year as the credit limit on my credit card was bumped up for some reason. Last year it went up by $2500 and just recently it looks like my limit was bumped up by about $3500 making my total limit for this credit card $11,700.

I’m just trying to think when in the world would I ever need to use that much credit on a personal credit card? People must be shopping for like cars or something along that nature. As usual, I guess it’s the flexibility of having it available. The only other thing I can think of where it would benefit me is that it will help my credit usage to my credit limit ratio which should help my credit score in the long run.

Learning To Walk Again Can Save Money

Monday, March 17th, 2008 by Alan Yu

Here where I live there is a public transportation called a Skytrain which is essentially a rapid transit system. A person was telling me before on how he decided to use public transportation to save money. It takes him about 10 minutes to walk to the station from his house each day which is a pain he mentions and whenever he can he tries to find someone who can drive him there instead.

While granted if your place of employment is extremely far away, then obviously you can’t just ignore using some type of transportation in the long run. But with samples like that though, it is kind of amazing on how vehicle dependent many become.

When I got my first job as a teenager I was always in that wanting to save money mentality. At the time to get to work it would take approximately five minutes with a car or about fifteen minutes with a bus. Instead, I decided to walk to work and back each time which took about thirty minutes. It helped keep me active while at the same time all that small amount of money I saved as a result really added up too.

I remember back then too whenever a manager/supervisor phoned me to ask if I could work as a result of someone not showing up I would say I would be there in about thirty minutes and not only did some of them think that was crazy for someone to walk that long, but they tried to convince me to use the transit instead. But even thinking of it from a financial point of view it wasn’t worth it as it was about $1.50 a ticket and considering the wage was about $7 an hour that meant losing about 20% of my earned money in comparing it from an hourly point of view.

As mentioned too, the savings really added up. I’ve carried on that mentality with me and I usually try to avoid using a vehicle of some sort whenever it makes sense. I still get the blank stares from some people at times as they wonder why I would want to walk say fifteen blocks when a vehicle could be used such as calling a taxi. To me, this is just one of those things that make sense to do.
