Money Greed

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was reading a small article today in the paper about how this former city manager was making about $88,000 a year and is currently being charged for operating a marijuana growth operation. Some other people who read it as well commented on how it seemed so crazy that a person making that much a year would try to do something like that to make even more money.

This kind of reminds me on how someone told me before that he believes it is kind of important to train yourself in being able to live below your means. Not only do you save a lot of money, but at the same time it kind of teaches you that money is just an object. As a result, you will tend to focus on being more resourceful as well as oppose to thinking that you always need money for everything. Odds are, you will less likely to fall into temptation as well in situations like the above that seems like a quick and easy way to make more money.

Family Owned Business

Monday, November 19th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Over the weekend I was at a restaurant and it was apparent that it was a family operated business. The staff was very friendly and it seemed like everyone was in tune in trying to achieve a common goal.

This got me thinking on how some people say working with family members in a business is great as you can fully trust the people you are working with. The other side would say that it is a horrible idea as working with people you know very well tends to cause a lot of conflict.

I think the key thing in this circumstance is to make obligations clear while being firm with business issues as you would normally.

Saving Up To Live Elsewhere

Sunday, November 18th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Someone was recently telling me that his finance in strategy in life was to work very hard to save a lot of money and then move to a different country where his dollar would go a lot further. For example, make $100,000 here in Canada and then move to India where he would be like a millionaire.

I personally would rather focus more the culture and living environment. Simple reason for that is that if I am happier in a certain place then there is no amount of money that can buy that. It’s always better to focus on the things that are important to you as oppose to just focusing on getting more for your dollar.

An Interesting Credit Card Payment Story

Saturday, November 17th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today I was told about an incident where there was a person who did not pay his credit card bill on time and as a result he received a lot of interest penalty on it. The person then phoned in and questioned why it worked this way.

The representative then explained how he has to pay the bill on or before the due date listed on his statement to avoid interest charges. His answer was that he thought the credit card expiry date was when one has to pay their bills and so he pleaded to the company to erase his current debt because of it.

The representative never heard of this before in his life and so he gave the person the benefit of doubt and credited their account for the interest charges. Of course, he still had to pay what he charged on the card. I was just thinking is that really possible for a person to not know that or was the person just really creative in getting sympathy? Interesting story nonetheless.

Item Hoarders

Friday, November 16th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today a person was telling me about something they saw on TV(Think it was from the Oprah show). Apparently, it dealt with people that had a habit of simply keeping everything that they own as oppose to getting rid of unnecessary things. At the same time, they just continue to acquire more unnecessary things. The term used to describe them were hoarders.

While it didn’t deal with finance specifically, apparently one story dealt with a lady that had an enormous amount of belongings scattered all over her living space. So they eventually organized and sold off a lot of the items which accumulated to well over $10,000.

I actually haven’t heard of the term hoarder for quite awhile. Getting rid of unnecessary things can be a great way to keep organized while at the same time recovering some funds. I guess there is a difference between being a hoarder and a collector. I personally see collecting more as an investment. In general, if you don’t intend to use it in some way or form then don’t buy it I’d say.
