Reasons For Giving Gifts

Friday, October 26th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Yesterday I received a gift and was told that they wanted to give it to me as an early Christmas present because they thought that I would like it a lot. Indeed, I did and was thankful. It was kind of interesting I thought though to call it a Christmas present since we are still months away from that date.

When you think about it, I guess most people in general feel strange buying gifts for people without having some kind of special occasion to do so.

Facebook Value

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was just reading about the news about the social networking site Facebook and how Microsoft has purchased a 1.6 percent stake in the company for about $240 million. Apparently Facebook is valued at about $15 billion.

I’m just reading the reactions from some people and a lot of casual observers think it is a crazy number indeed. I’ve talked to someone before who actually had some knowledge of the effectiveness in advertising within that site and apparently it is a very good way for a company to target a specific audience that will buy from you. In that sense, it is an extremely valuable site.

These types of company value estimates always makes me wonder on just how long it can keep its momentum going. I guess those Google stocks are an example of that.

Kids And Expensive Items

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today I was looking after my nephew for a short while and he seemed to be really intrigued in the small home entertainment room. Like most kids, he basically tries to grab everything that looks new and interesting to him.

One thing that I noticed that was kind of funny was how after mingling with a whole bunch of items, he tended to always want to grab and run away with the more expensive items. For example, there were some unused device remotes that he would first pick up and investigate. But in the end, he tried to run away with the Harmony remote which just happens to the expensive one.

Some other highlight moments was that he kept thinking that the Wii remote was a telephone and so he kept placing it to his ear while trying to say what sounds like “hello”. Now I just hope he doesn’t start throwing them in the future.

Principles VS Financial Losses

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was having a conversation with a person about his views when it comes to doing the right things in life which sometimes require that you take a hit financially. For example, if someone has just scammed you out of thousands of dollars and it looks like it could possibly cost you more at the end to pursue it even if you did win, would you do it still?

As an example, there was actually a story that happened recently where a women had a very good case against a doctor of some sort who had a reputation of not exactly being entirely professional and was actually convicted for past events. Although she really wanted to do something about it, she was told that it would be a very expensive process to do so. As a result, she didn’t go through with it as the financial risk was pretty high.

I guess it really depends on your current position in life.

Rolling Out An Idea

Monday, October 22nd, 2007 by Alan Yu

Been awhile since I posted anything in this section. I was trying to flesh out my previous idea, but due to current events it doesn’t seem like I can come up with the necessary time to execute it. I did think of something over the weekend which I will indeed publish since I don’t think it requires too much of a time investment.

I’ve already registered the domain and it should take a few days to flesh out.
