Shopping Ads

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was checking my e–mail and noticed that I got an invite to beta test a new ad program called shopping ads. Basically, it’s for web publishers to display ads on their site. The way this one works from what I read is that it revolves around finding items from price shopping comparison sites. In turn, it displays new deals on the publisher’s site. Let’s see, I am going to put the code below and let’s see what pops up:

Of course, I can’t actually see what is going to display until I publish this post. If it’s relevant to what people are interested in here, maybe I’ll try using it as another avenue to generate income for this little journey. Oh, happy halloween to everyone as well.

Another GST Tax Cut

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was just reading the news today on how in the beginning of next year there is apparently a plan in place to cut our GST tax rate from 6% to 5%. For those who don’t know, we pay two types of sales tax here.

Kind of surprising I thought considering we just had it decreased by 1% not too long ago. While I guess this should be a good thing from a consumer perspective, it kind of makes me wonder if cutting taxes that fast will have a negative effect in the long run.

The Up And Down Dollar

Monday, October 29th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Doesn’t seem like this rising Canadian dollar bit is ever slowing down news wise as today there was a lot of buzz of it reaching to about 1.05 US. This made me curious in seeing what the trend has been like overall. I quickly went to Yahoo Finance and saw this quick chart which shows the Canadian dollar rising in comparison to the US one:

Just for perspective sake, I also saw the chart as if you were from the other side:

One person told me that staring at these charts make it look like a stock market. The main positive that I see is that products have definitely become less expensive.

A Money Leecher

Sunday, October 28th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today a person was telling me about a situation where there is a person they know who seems to get by as a result of sweet talking their way into borrowing money from one person to another by using sob stories. Literally, the person apparently owes people money well over the $10,000+ mark.

The money was for irresponsible reasons too such as gambling or over spending. To make it worse, the person’s attitude and habits never changed. A lot of the lenders, who were friends and family to the person, just simply gave up it seems from even trying to ask for their money back.

Boy, do I have a story to tell about this when the time is right. I think the definite advice for this type of situation is that if you ever decide to lend the people you know a lot of money, always have some kind of documented assurance in place so that if they don’t pay you back as promised you can easily get something back from them without any fuss. You can be generous while at the same time protecting yourself as well.

Million Dollar Term

Saturday, October 27th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Alright, so I guess this is technically the first money idea I had which is actually live now. You can visit the website at http://www.milliondollarterm.com. While this isn’t the very first idea that I posted about before, I was just staring at the monitor one day and thought this one was less time consuming.

The main train of thought was that I wanted to create something that could be fun, interactive and at the same time actually provides people the ability to make a profit should they decide to do so. I was trying to think of a board game type of look where people could place ads on these blocks to help them get exposure. I couldn’t help but to be reminded of that million dollar homepage awhile back and thought that the layout and approach might be good.

So the funny thing is that a million is usually the standard figure people use to label as a lot of money, so I tried to determine a good number value wise to determine how many blocks I would need to sell to reach that figure. First I was thinking like $25 per block space, but then trying to imagine selling 40,000 of them seemed a bit much as well as trying to fit them on a page. Strangely enough, 10,000 of them at $100 each sounded like a more well rounded figure.

Of course, the first thing that clicked on my head was that it seems incredibly similar to that other site at first, but I thought it wouldn’t matter too much since the direction isn’t really the same. Like most things too, a lot of the success has to do with the execution such as trying to get the word out. Example, some people start by going to friends and family while others use say a third party publicist.

So, let’s see where this takes me and the type of help I will get along the way. That would actually be great if it worked out too as I’m sure that I can think of ways to use it to help others afterwards while at the same time using some of the funds to continue this journey.
