Making Hobbies As Your Income Source

Sunday, September 30th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was talking to a person recently on how one of his friends has created a successful business that generates five to six figures a year by selling toys/figures. He simply did it as a side project before since he had a lot of passion for it and surprisingly it has ballooned into a non stop business which he now does full time.

You hear this a lot I’m sure, but it really does start by doing something that you are passionate about because at the end of the day it can’t simply be about the money. It is too easy to lose motivation just basing it on money as well. You can easily start small like most people. It can definitely be great from a lifestyle point of view too as it doesn’t feel like work.

Price And Food Value

Saturday, September 29th, 2007 by Alan Yu

Today I was at a restaurant and a conversation came on how the items on the menu were more expensive compared to most other places. One perspective was that if the food is good then the price is justified. The other perspective is that even if it is good, the price does play a role in determining whether or not it is worth it.

Unless it is a special occasion, I usually have the second mentality. I guess it is similar to buying anything else really. While the features/benefits may be better on one product, if the other one satisfies you and is a lot less then it makes more to sense to me personally to save money.

Free Food or Prizes

Friday, September 28th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was having a conversation recently at an event about the turnout rate. This one had free food which attracted a lot of people it seemed and in a different day it had door prizes with the turnout not being as good. Probably more coincidental than anything, but it kind of makes you wonder.

From my experience, the sign of free food at an event usually attracts more people. In some ways I’d say it makes mingling at events a little more casual. Then again, it can get messy as well. Of course, if it was like a free million dollar prize I’m sure everyone will be flocking too.

Appreciating Other People’s Time And Money

Thursday, September 27th, 2007 by Alan Yu

I was watching that Kitchen nightmare show yesterday and there was an interesting theme that talked about how the general manager of the restaurant was ineffective in his role. The interesting comment was how he was being labeled as a person who was scamming and taking advantage of the owner of the restaurant by pretending that he didn’t do anything wrong. Of course, he was very defensive about that.

Most people that I have met are usually very open when they know that they have done a below par job and then somehow try to make up for it. It’s one of the main ways to grow as a person I’d say. At the same time, you can’t help but to have that feeling that you took something without equally giving back in those situations. The funny thing is for the people who don’t want to admit it, just like the above example, I usually see them get very defensive while trying to justify their actions in almost everyway.

I think it come down to appreciation. All the people that I have seen personally that do become extremely defensive in these types of scenario don’t really have the same level of appreciation for time and money as others. Of course than can be an extremely generalizing statement, but that has been true for the most part that I have seen. If you take a lot from someone, then you should give a lot too I’d say.

Save Your Dollar or Invest Your Dollar

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 by Alan Yu

One thing that I think is kind of interesting is what people do with a small amount of money. For some, having say one dollar is too little to do anything in their minds and so they simply throw it in a jar or something along that line. For others, they keep trying to think on how they can turn that one dollar into say a dollar and twenty five cents.

The funny thing for myself is that I think the best thing to do is to indeed try and find ways to make that money work for you. However, over the years I have just got into the habit of saving up loose change and then when it reaches to a certain amount I would simply bring it to the bank. I guess having piggy banks as a kid is the main reason for that.

Overall, with that little fund it would be more for practice I’d say to show yourself that if you can find a way to make a profit with one dollar then imagine what you can do with one hundred dollars. After that, imagine what you could do with a thousand dollars and so on. It’s a good habit to save, but at the same time it can be a bad habit to leave your money idle.
