The Groupthink Mentality of Spending Money

Saturday, December 9th, 2006 by Alan Yu

While browsing around the mall recently, one of my friend was interested in buying a game and so we went to the mall. Since it is the Christmas season, almost everyone is in a shopping mode and not surprisingly the item in question was sold out everywhere. The interesting comment he made afterwards was how before he was only interested in buying it, but now that it looks like it is a hot item that doesn’t seem like he will be able to obtain easily he now definitely wants to buy it and would be willing to pay even more than the regular price of the game to get it.

I’ve always found this to be a little funny as this is not the first time I have encountered such a situation and think that it is interesting that people would be willing to spend more to get something mainly because it places you in a certain group. I guess this is kind of like that jumping off the bridge analogy and how you should be able to make decisions based on what’s best for you and not just because everyone else is doing it. When it comes to spending money on things that everyone else seems to be buying, I personally never justify a purchase solely on that as I always keep in mind about a saying that goes along the lines of something like if you buy into someone else’s opinion then you are buying into their lifestyle. From my experience, everyone that always buys the latest and greatest just because everyone else is too are usually the same people who complain that they never seem to have enough money and I know that I don’t want to be one of those people. So why would I want to worry so much about buying that product just because that group of people want it too?

That can be true with most things in life as well. I personally think it is just basic common sense where when you learn to think for yourself you will become more empowered to make better decisions that will meet your needs as opposed to being worried about what others will think. Same thing with your money, do what is best for your situation as opposed to solely basing it on what other people do with it as you want to create your own winning group to be in.

Boy Gets Arrested For Opening His Christmas Present Early

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 by Alan Yu

This is just incredible. The Herald newspaper did a report about a story that happened in Rock Hill where a 27 year old single mom called the police when her 12 year old son opened up his Christmas present early. You can read the story along with the interview by clicking here.

To be brief, apparently the mom and the kid’s 63-year-old great-grandmother was nagging him not to open his present, which was a Nintendo Gameboy Advance, until Christmas. The 12 year old kid went ahead and opened it anyways despite what they said and then hid it in his room. The mom then discovered that the gift was unwrapped and that the Gameboy was missing. When she questioned his son about it he denied knowing where it was. She then threatened to call the police on him which scared him enough to give the system back. Despite giving it back, she called the police anyways and the boy was taken away and charged with petty larceny. The mom then comments how her son has had a history of bad behavior and she did this to teach him a lesson as she didn’t know what else to do.

Like I say all the time when I read things like this, just when you think you’ve seen it all…….

Million Dollar Homepage 2 – Pixelotto

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 by Alan Yu

A lot of you may remember a person named Alex Tew who was just 21 years old and created a site called the Million Dollar Homepage where his goal was to sell these pixel advertisements for a $1 each in hopes to earn one million dollars. As you all know, he was successful in doing so and hinted in wanted to do something just as far fetched again.

Well, that time has come as it has been uncovered that his new plan is to apparently launch a site called Pixelotto. The site will be the same where he will attempt to sell one million pixels to people wanting to advertise on the site except he will now be charging $2 for each pixel. The new twist is that once he sells out his inventory, he will hold some kind of lottery where a person who clicks on a correct advertisement will win one million dollars.
Will he be able to do it again? With the news about this traveling as fast as it is, I bet there is a good chance he will be able to pull it off again. This was the announcement that was sent from Alex about his new venture:
